When Is the Best Time to Visit the Dolomites?

The best time to visit Dolomites lakes and peaks from Venice is mid-June to late September, when the Col de Varda chairlift runs (18 June to 20 September) and the Tre Cime toll road is open. The second half of September keeps the lifts and road but drops the Lake Braies summer access rule, which ends on 15 September.

Quick answer Mid-June to late September, best after 15 September

Go between 18 June and 20 September, when the Col de Varda chairlift, the Tre Cime toll road and the Tre Cime shuttle all run. The quietest full-access window is 16 to 20 September, after the Lake Braies access rule ends. From November to late May the high road is shut, so a winter trip centres on Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Key takeaways

What Is the Best Month to Visit the Dolomites in Italy?

September is the best single month, because the road to Rifugio Auronzo, the Tre Cime shuttle and the Col de Varda chairlift still run while the Lake Braies access rule ends on 15 September.

Seasons in the Dolomites are set by what opens, not only by the weather. The table below shows which roads, shuttles and lifts run in each month on a Dolomites day trip from Venice.

Month-by-Month: What Is Open

This table lines up the official opening windows for the Tre Cime toll road, the Dolomiti Bus Tre Cime shuttle, the Col de Varda chairlift above Lake Misurina and the Lake Braies traffic rule, so each month shows what a visitor can actually reach.

Why the Calendar Matters More Than the Forecast

The Tre Cime road is normally driveable from the end of May to the end of October, weather permitting. It climbs about 6 km from Lake Antorno to Rifugio Auronzo at 2,333 m. Outside that window the Three Peaks are out of reach for a day visitor.

The Dolomiti Bus Tre Cime shuttle runs daily from 30 May between Misurina Genzianella and Rifugio Auronzo. A day ticket is 10 EUR per person and cash is not accepted on board. The Col de Varda chairlift runs 18 June to 20 September. The adult return is 17 EUR. All three line up from mid-June to late September, which is why that block is the answer to the best time question.

When Is the Best Time for Hiking in the Dolomites?

Hike from mid-June to late September, when the road and shuttle reach Rifugio Auronzo at 2,333 m and the Col de Varda chairlift is running.

The classic day hike from a Venice trip is the Tre Cime loop. Its start point is open only in the road season.

The Tre Cime Loop

The loop around the Three Peaks is under 10 km with 468 m of ascent and takes about 3.5 hours. It starts at Rifugio Auronzo. A car needs an online parking reservation tied to the number plate, and the toll is 40 EUR per car. The ticket is valid 12 hours from the booked entry time, and there is no entry before it.

Without a car, take the Dolomiti Bus shuttle from Misurina Genzianella via Lake Antorno. It runs daily from 30 May and a day ticket costs 10 EUR.

Shorter Walks for a Day Trip

A day tour from Venice runs 9 to 10 hours door to door, so a full loop rarely fits. The Cadini di Misurina viewpoint is a 30-minute walk from Rifugio Auronzo. Lake Misurina, at 1,756 m, has a flat shore path.

From its shore the Three Peaks are in view. The Col de Varda chairlift lifts you above the lake from 9:00 to 16:45, to 17:15 from 25 July to 30 August.

Tours That Fit

Summer and September day trips from Venice that include Lake Braies, Lake Misurina or the Tre Cime area.

Is September a Good Month to Visit the Dolomites?

Yes, September is the strongest month for a day trip, because everything that opens in summer still runs and Lake Braies is free of its traffic rule after 15 September.

September splits into two halves with different rules at Lake Braies.

1 to 15 September

The Lake Braies traffic rule still applies from 9:00 to 16:00. In those hours the lake is reached only by public transport, on foot, by bicycle, or with an online reservation or a transit permit. The Prags tourist office says arriving before 9:00 does not guarantee parking.

Its combined ticket is 44 EUR and includes a full-day transit permit, guaranteed parking and a 22 EUR voucher for restaurants and shops, booked in advance only.

16 to 30 September

The Braies rule is over, the Col de Varda chairlift runs to 20 September and the Tre Cime road stays open. Dolomiti Bus line 51 links Cortina d'Ampezzo, Passo Tre Croci and Misurina Genzianella from 10 September to 4 October. That makes the last weeks of the month the easiest time to reach Lake Misurina by bus from Cortina.

Tours such as Full-Day Tour of the Dolomites and Braies Lake at $100 per person over 10 hours cover the lake without the permit planning.

When Not to Go to Dolomites?

Skip April and November if you want the Three Peaks or the lifts, because the Tre Cime road opens only at the end of May and closes at the end of October, and the Col de Varda chairlift runs only 18 June to 20 September.

The worst time to visit the Dolomites on a day trip is the gap between the winter and summer seasons.

Is April a Good Time to Visit the Dolomites?

For the high places, no. The Tre Cime shuttle starts only on 30 May and the road to Rifugio Auronzo opens at the end of May, weather permitting. The Col de Varda chairlift is shut until 18 June.

Cortina d'Ampezzo stays reachable. Cortina Express runs daily from Mestre at 11.00, 14.00 and 17.00 and arrives in Cortina at 13.30, 16.30 and 19.30. An April visit is a town day in Cortina, not a hiking day.

November and Early December

The road to Rifugio Auronzo closes at the end of October. The summer lifts above Lake Misurina are closed. Bus links still run, because the Cortina Express winter timetable starts on 1 October and runs daily.

Dolomiti Bus leaves Piazzale Roma at 6.20 and reaches Cortina at 9.30. For a guided day in the cold months, the Dolomites winter day trip is the option built for the season.

Peak Weeks With Restrictions

July and August are not a bad time, but they come with rules. Lake Braies is under the traffic rule from 1 July to 15 September, 9:00 to 16:00. The Tre Cime car park needs an online booking with the number plate added by 23:59 the day before.

Plan these two steps or join a tour.

How Do Crowds and Costs Change Between Peak and Shoulder Months?

The busiest weeks are 1 July to 15 September, when Lake Braies runs its access rule, and the extra costs of a self-drive day come from fixed fees that do not change by month.

The authorities restrict traffic when visitor numbers peak. That rule is the clearest crowd signal you can plan around.

Fees for a Self-Drive Day

This table lists the official fees a driver or bus rider meets at Lake Braies, the Tre Cime road and the Col de Varda lift, as published by the Prags tourist office, the Auronzo parking service, Dolomiti Bus and the Auronzo Misurina lift operator.

What a Guided Day Costs Instead

A guided Dolomites day trip from Venice folds the driving into one price per person. The Best of the Dolomites Mountains Day Trip is $111 over 10 hours. Dolomites & Cortina d'Ampezzo Small Group Day Tour from Venice is $210.96 over 10 hours. Free cancellation on the Tre Cime parking runs up to 5 days before, so a self-driver who books early keeps some flexibility.

When Is the Best Time for Photography in the Dolomites?

For the Three Peaks, shoot between the end of May and the end of October, and book the earliest Tre Cime parking slot you can use, because there is no entry before the booked time.

Light is best early and late, but in the Dolomites access sets the limits first.

Tre Cime and Cadini di Misurina

The Cadini di Misurina viewpoint is a 30-minute walk from Rifugio Auronzo. A car parking ticket is valid 12 hours from the booked entry time, so the slot decides whether you are there for morning light. The road is 6 km from Lake Antorno to Rifugio Auronzo, and winter tyres or chains are advised late in the season.

Lakes Without the Crowd

Lake Misurina has the Three Peaks in view from its shore. Lake Braies is open to private cars outside 9:00 to 16:00 even in high summer, but arriving before 9:00 does not guarantee parking. After 15 September the rule ends, which makes the second half of September the calmer window for lake shots.

A day tour such as Dolomites, Lake Braies and Tre Cime di Lavaredo at $110 over 10 hours lists Lake Braies and the Tre Cime area on its route.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Dolomites With Kids?

Go between 18 June and 20 September, when the Col de Varda chairlift is open and children under 6 ride free.

Families get the most from the weeks when the lifts and the flat lake paths are all in reach.

Easy Wins for Children

The Col de Varda chairlift above Lake Misurina charges 17 EUR for an adult return and 12 EUR for a reduced return. Children under 6 ride free. Lake Misurina at 1,756 m has a flat shore path that suits young walkers.

It hosted Olympic speed skating in 1956, the last Games held on natural ice, which gives older children a story to go with the view.

The Length of the Day

Day tours from Venice run 9 to 10 hours. Dolomites Day Trip with Cortina and 2 Lakes is $107 per person over 9 hours and holds a 4.9 rating from 1182 reviews. For a younger child, the shorter 9-hour days are the easier fit. The Cortina Express bus is an option for families who want their own pace.

From the airport tour bus parking at 11.20 it reaches Cortina at 13.30.

Can You Visit the Dolomites in Winter?

Yes, Cortina d'Ampezzo is reachable every day of winter by Cortina Express and Dolomiti Bus, but the Tre Cime road and the summer lifts are closed.

A winter visit is a different trip from a summer one, built around Cortina rather than the high lakes.

Venice Marco Polo, 162 km from Cortina d'Ampezzo. Cortina Express leaves the airport tour bus parking at 11.20, 14.20 and 17.20 and takes about 2 h 10 min to Cortina. Landing in Treviso instead? See the day trip from Treviso.

What is the worst time to visit the Dolomites?

April and November, when the Tre Cime road is closed and the summer lifts are shut. The road runs from the end of May to the end of October. Read when not to go for the details.

Is autumn a good time to visit the Dolomites?

Early autumn is. Until 20 September the Col de Varda chairlift runs, and the Tre Cime road stays open to the end of October, weather permitting, with winter tyres or chains advised. See September in the Dolomites.

Is the weather in Cortina d'Ampezzo a reason to change the month?

The high road runs only from the end of May to the end of October, weather permitting, with winter tyres or chains advised. In the cold months, plan around Cortina itself and the Dolomites winter day trip.
